Founded in 1861, the University of Washington is one of the oldest state-supported institutions of higher education on the West Coast and is one of the preeminent research universities in the world. The freshman class entering in 2005 had an average high school grade point of 3.69, with an average SAT, math and verbal combined, of 1198. About 25 percent of undergraduates are Asian American; 3 percent African American; 4 percent Latino; and 1 percent Native American. Exactly 54 percent of undergraduates are women. About 82 percent of undergraduates are state residents. Research contributes directly to the educational goals of all students, graduate, professional, and undergraduate.
